On Thursday 13 March, our team at JRS Australia joined with over 800 representatives from civil society groups, faith organisations, schools and communities from Western Sydney, for the Sydney Alliance Pre-Election Assembly.

This was an opportunity for us to combine and to sound our collective voice, calling for a more just, safe, equitable and sustainable society.

Josephine Rechichi, our Acting Country Director, shone a light on the people we serve, calling all to resist the dehumanisation of refugees and all forcibly displaced people seeking Australia’s Protection.

Senator Mehreen Feruqi from the Greens echoed the call for access, justice and inclusion for migrants and refugees.

The Assembly had the opportunity to call for action on housing affordability and climate change from the Government.

Dr Andrew Charlton MP, Federal Member for Parramatta and Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy represented the Government and responded to the Assemblies series of asks. The Government did commit to continued engagement with the Western Sydney community represented at the Assembly, which is a starting point.

Independent Zali Steggle was also in attendance and committed to working with the community to improve access to safe housing for all.

“We left the event feeling part of a positive voice for change, proud to be representing the people we serve at a forum with decision makers,” Jose shared.
