One Million Stories: Join JRS for Refugee Week 2026
04 May 2026
Be part of our shared story this Refugee Week!
Refugee Week takes place from 14–20 June. It’s a time to honour refugees from around the world, celebrating the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict or persecution, and who contribute so much to the Australian community.
This Year’s Theme: ‘A Million Stories’
Since 1947, Australia has granted one million permanent humanitarian visas. That’s one million people who fled danger and found safety here. One million journeys of courage and hope. One million new beginnings in Australia.
Refugee Week 2026 is a chance to pause and honour that legacy. Not as a statistic, but as a collection of real human stories. Behind each protection journey is a person with a story: someone who left everything behind to find safety, who showed incredible strength, and who has helped build the Australia we know today.

Resources for Schools
Want to get creative?
Book a Speaker or Workshop
Refugee Week is an opportunity to learn about global displacement, and to encounter the human stories behind it. Inviting a JRS Refugee Leader to visit your school is a powerful way to do this. Hearing directly from someone with lived experience of seeking asylum in Australia transforms abstract concepts into real connection and allows students to see refugees and people seeking asylum as members of our shared community.
School workshops offer students the opportunity to:
- Learn about the global refugee context
- Understand Australia’s refugee and asylum policy
- Hear a personal story from a Refugee Leader
- Engage in discussion and guided reflection
- Explore practical ways to take action
