Finding Safety Celebrates Connection and Culture at Mother’s Day Community Celebration
16 June 2026|Vandana Setia
Finding Safety recently hosted a vibrant Mother’s Day Community Celebration, bringing together 55 women for a day of cultural connection, celebration, and community.
The event featured an Afghan cultural theme, creating an opportunity for participants to share and experience elements of Afghan heritage through traditional cuisine, cultural performances, and a dress and jewellery stall showcasing traditional attire. Women were invited to try on traditional clothing and capture memorable photographs, creating moments of joy and connection.
The celebration fostered a warm and inclusive environment where women could come together, build relationships, and share their experiences. The cultural entertainer was a highlight of the day, bringing energy, laughter, and engagement to the gathering.
Several women attended Women’s Space for the first time, with many expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in a welcoming and culturally enriching community event.
A special moment occurred when staff discovered that one of the new participants was celebrating her birthday on the same day. The group came together to celebrate her, making her feel welcomed and valued. The heartfelt gesture was appreciated by attendees and has inspired the introduction of monthly birthday celebrations at Women’s Space to recognise and honour participants throughout the year.
The event also provided an opportunity to celebrate achievements within the Women’s Space community.
Women’s Space Manager Sara acknowledged Maggie for successfully obtaining her Australian citizenship and congratulated Vandana on completing her counselling course. These milestones were warmly celebrated, reflecting the encouragement, support, and sense of belonging fostered within the community.
The celebration also recognised the dedication of Women’s Space volunteers. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Sister Susan and volunteer Linda in recognition of their ongoing commitment and contribution.
Both volunteers were deeply touched by the acknowledgement and expressed their gratitude. For Sister Susan, who attended her first Women’s Space celebration at St Patrick’s Hall, the recognition was a particularly meaningful part of the day.
The Mother’s Day Community Celebration highlighted the strength of community, the importance of cultural inclusion, and the meaningful connections created through Women’s Space. Events like these continue to provide a safe and supportive environment where women can celebrate, connect, and thrive.
About the Finding Safety Project
The Finding Safety Project is a key ‘missing piece’ in the services sector puzzle, bridging the knowledge, capacity and practice gap between the asylum seeker and refugee sector and the domestic and family and sexual violence support sector.
The first project of its kind in NSW and one of the first in Australia, the Finding Safety Project continues to lead the way by resourcing women, improving safety outcomes and building community capacity to prevent and respond appropriately to complex sexual and gender based violence (‘SGBV’).
