JRS Refugee Week School Resources
To mark Refugee Week 2026, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Australia has released a suite of free school resources to support teachers and students engage with this year’s Refugee Week theme ‘A Million Stories’.
This Year’s Refugee Week Theme
Since 1947, Australia has welcomed one million people through its humanitarian program. That’s one million people who fled danger and found safety here. One million journeys of courage and hope. One million new beginnings in Australia.
But this isn’t really about a number. Behind each protection journey is a person with a story: someone who left everything behind to find safety, who showed incredible strength, and who has helped build the Australia we know today.
Refugee Week is an opportunity to honour those stories.
Bring Refugee Week to Life at Your School…
JRS has developed a comprehensive package of resources to help schools mark Refugee Week in a meaningful and engaging way. Suitable for students from Kindergarten to Year 12, the resources are designed to support learning, spark discussion, and inspire action.

Bring a Refugee Leader to Your School…
Refugee Week is an opportunity to learn about global displacement, and to encounter the human stories behind it. Inviting a JRS Refugee Leader to visit your school is a powerful way to do this. Hearing directly from someone with lived experience of seeking asylum in Australia transforms abstract concepts into real connection and allows students to see refugees and people seeking asylum as members of our shared community.
School workshops offer students the opportunity to:
- Learn about the global refugee context
- Understand Australia’s refugee and asylum policy
- Hear a personal story from a Refugee Leader
- Engage in discussion and guided reflection
- Explore practical ways to take action
Due to high demand during Refugee Week, schools are strongly encouraged to book a workshop in the lead-up to the week. This helps students build background knowledge and engage more meaningfully with the week’s activities and discussions.
